Shooting dragonflies is a lot like the challenge of shooting Fairy Basslets. They are small, quick, and in almost perpetual motion. And, like the basslets, they tend to move in a pattern, so it’s often possible to predict a spot they will return to. Fortunately, unlike the little fish, dragonflies do stop often, if only for a moment. Unfortunately, they have 360 degree vision, so you can’t hide from them or sneak up on them.
So, the trick to getting the shot is to settle into a comfortable spot, compose your shot on a twig or blade of grass your subject has been frequenting, and wait quietly and patiently for the anticipated return. At least sitting is a bit easier than hovering motionless mid-water and worrying about exhaled bubbles scaring away your target.
