Moonrise Over Lac Bay
It was the end of our surface day after a week of diving in Bonaire a few years ago, and we happened upon Foodies, a wonderful restaurant with a beautiful view of the ocean near Lac Bay. It was early, so we had our choice of the outdoor tables.
It had been a great day of riding horses on the beach and seeing a side of the island we don’t visit on dive days. The evening was beautiful. The food was amazing. We talked about the week, and we wished we weren’t flying home the next morning. Then, because every once in a while life really does actually feel like a movie, the moon began to rise out of the water into the clouds. It was, in a word, magical.
Because we knew we’d be riding, I had brought along only the camera and my walk-around 18-135 lens, and that was probably a good thing. If I’d had my camera bag with me, I’d have been tempted to pull out the 300mm. Instead, I used what I had, found that a table lamp made a perfect foreground, and waited for the moon to re-appear from behind a low cloud. The 135mm was long enough to give the moon enough size while also including the ocean, trees, and lamp.
Every time we see this image, we re-live that day, and we can’t wait to get back to Bonaire again. What more can you ask of a photograph?
